Abstract

In this issue, Epidemiologia&Prevenzione, the journal of the Italian Association of Epidemiology, hosts the thorough Health Technology Assessment Report: HPV DNA based primary screening for cervical cancer precursors (Epidemiol Prev 2012;36(3-4) suppl 1:e1-72), a work comparable to the European and American HTA publications by quality and size. The Report is produced in a crucial moment for cervical cancer screening: since it was first proposed, 70 years ago, the Pap test could take second place to the HPV test as primary screening test. If the Italian medical community will positively welcome the introduction of the new test proposed in this HTA Report, Italy would be one of the first countries to make this fundamental change and to apply HPV test to its screening system implemented during the last decades (see also the Annual Reports about Italian programmed screening system published as supplements of this journal).
